200- 400 words analysis of ‘ways of seeing episode 4- the language of advertising’ that was screened in class during session 03, referring to the following aspects of semiotic analysis:
- the distinction between signifier and signified of the sign

- the transfers of signifieds between signs
- the codes that structure this transfer of signifiers
- the wider structures of meaning which are the ideologies or mythologies
- the ways of seeing that can challenge the signs, codes and ideologies and mythologies

ASSIGNMENT FOR WEEK05 SESSION

Post to your blog (before session 05) a summary of Foucault’s essay ‘Panopticism’ (available online> follow link)

During class you will apply your understanding of panopticism to your own lives – you will analyse the panoptic elements of a contemporary institution (eg university campus and/ or public transport ) . Use digital camera throughout the week to document panopticism in daily life and upload photos to your blog along your own writing.
